Getting to know the Island

GENERAL ORIENTATION

Getting to know the Island
Phu Quoc is located in the Gulf of Thailand 50km from Ha Tien and 120 km from Rach Gia on the Vietnamese mainland, the Island is approx. 600 km2 and is 48km from north to south and 19 km from east to west, the island packs a lot in to a small space.!
The Island's shape is like a “teardrop", widest at the top in the north and narrow at the bottom in the south.
Running along the west coast is the popular Long Beach, home to many resorts and restaurants and the perfect spot to catch the wonderful Phu Quoc sunset, as the beach runs for almost half the length of the island, you shouldn’t struggle to find a quiet spot.
Whilst Long Beach dominates the west coast, in the north the National Park and rural areas are key attractions with hiking trails, waterfalls and amazing wildlife awaits those with a strong sense of adventure!

The 14 smaller islands to the south make up the stunning Phu Quoc Archipelago makes for a great day out with fishing and snorkeling trips being very popular excursions to their remote southern island beaches.
Temperatures are rarely dipping below 25oC (77oF) so any time of year is a good time to experience Phu Quoc, there are however some differences in the weather throughout the year, most noticeably between the wet and dry seasons.
Our Tip: Prime time to visit is November to April, skies are blue, the sea is clear and diving perfect!

DUONG DONG TOWN

Getting to know the Island
Phu Quoc’s main town is located on the west coast about half way up the island, this is a typical Vietnamese town but developing very fast into an urban area with bustling morning markets (quiet lunchtimes) and busy again in early evening as the locals finish their day to head out in the cooler hours.
Duong Dong has a great selection of Cafes, Bars & Restaurants as well the night market, supermarkets, shops and services for pretty much every eventuality.
Our Tip: The town Marina and Dinh Cau temple is where you can always catch a cool breeze as well as being a popular visiting spot especially at night for the locals, a great spot.

AROUND OUR ISLAND

Getting to know the Island
If you’re moving around the island it’s useful to get your bearings, the Phu Quoc International Airport is towards the southern end of Phu Quoc about 10 km or a 20-minute drive from Duong Dong Town.
There’s essentially one main road running the length of the island up the middle, which splits in the north
of the island to take you to the northwestern and northeastern corners.
There are two other main roads, one from the Phu Quoc International Airport heading south to An Thoi and also one from Duong Dong Town heading north west finishing at the sleepy coastal village of Ganh Dau.
Whatever road you take though, and however you take it, you’ll find plenty of quiet spots to explore – often
with just a handful of villagers for company and that may only be on a Sunday!
That’s the beauty of Phu Quoc – so much variety in such a small space.
Our Tip: Most small back roads are unsurfaced and may not be suitable for motorbikes or bicycles, particularly slippery in the wet season so pay careful attention.

LOCAL FOOD

Getting to know the Island
Our Tip: For that real local culinary experience go where the locals go!

Try your luck along 30/4 street from 6pm there are some great restaurants and at reasonable prices too the further you go from the center of town on this road the better the restaurant!

WHEN TO VISIT?

Throughout the year the weather can vary from one season to the next but compared to the rest of Vietnam the weather in Phu Quoc is consistently the best!
Our Tip:The prime time to visit is November to April when skies are blue, the sea is clear and diving at its best, however for stunning waterfalls the rain season is a much better time.
