Street Food Comeback!

Phu Quoc is a foodie’s paradise! Not only is the best of Vietnamese and International cuisine available, but every morning local fisherman bring ashore the freshest and tastiest seafood to be found in Southeast Asia.

Chefs the world over are attracted by the island’s abundance of fresh ingredients, and the various resorts and restaurants around the island are taking Phu Quoc cuisine to new levels.

However, to get a true taste of what else is on offer, be sure to try some local Vietnamese food. The island is not short of drinking options. Whether it’s at a sports bar having ice cold happy hour beers or sipping on sophisticated cocktails and sundowners at the day’s end, you’ll find a watering hole for every occasion on Phu Quoc. Here are some of our suggestions, representing a range of options and budgets across the island.

In recent times when one would ask me about trying the local foods not only would I encourage them to try anything but the options to be honest were a little limited! My usual response being, just head to the night market and you can find lots of eating options there and the locals go there too. However these days because of the over commercialization of the night market this option is not such an enjoyable one anymore. Don’t get me wrong the night market is worth a visit but perhaps only once!

So these days when I am posed with the same question I will advise visitors to check out three main areas in the center of the Duong Dong, where there are many different types of Vietnamese foods available at different times of the day. My first choice for a breakfast area is along the river on Bach Dang St smack in the center of town and just across the water from the local market. Here you can devour some delicious favorites such as Bún Bò, Bán Mi, Cơm Tấm, Bò Né just to name a few.

It's hard to recommend an area for lunch as the locals don’t tend to work much during the middle of the day but if you head to Nuna Guesthouse & Restaurant, you can find a great range of local Vietnamese lunch cuisine at very reasonable prices. For the late afternoon and evenings, I love the Dinh Cau Temple area where you will find very simple, mainly street cart food and drinks at extremely local prices!

If you would like more dinner type options then best to head over the bridge and from there along Nguyen Trung Truc St to the small roundabout at the old airport, here there are many different foods available from 5pm until about 9pm.

Whichever way you go one thing is for sure, once you get down to their level the locals will love you more and trying their food with a smile is guaranteed to make you new friends.

Get out there and discover the local cuisine!
